Practical guidance

Puppy training

Puppy training creates communication, household routines, confidence, and age-appropriate foundations.

What this can look like

  • Biting and overexcitement
  • Difficulty settling
  • Unclear household routines

A useful place to begin

1

Keep sessions short and reward the behaviors you want repeated.

2

Balance training, play, rest, and safe exposure to new environments.

Exact first steps

1

Use one- to three-minute sessions after your puppy has moved, eaten, and used the bathroom. Practice name response, following, and settling on a mat.

2

Redirect biting to an appropriate toy, then pause interaction if biting immediately returns. Overtired puppies often need rest more than another correction.

3

Introduce new surfaces, sounds, people, and places at a distance where your puppy can observe and take food without being forced closer.
