What this can look like
- Pulling or zig-zagging
- Ignoring you outdoors
- Struggling near distractions
A useful place to begin
Begin in easier places before adding busy sidewalks.
Reward the position and attention you want instead of only correcting pulling.
Exact first steps
Start in a quiet area with five to ten steps. Mark and reward while the leash is loose beside you—not after it tightens.
When the leash becomes tight, stop moving. Resume when your dog turns back or creates slack so pulling never becomes the way forward.
Add only one challenge at a time: more distance, a busier location, or a nearby distraction. Short successful walks teach more than one long struggle.
